The magic continued ⭐️ Soo many stars and the northern lights showed up again. We did grill sausages on the fire and ate them with lompe (Norwegian potato flatbread), mustard and ketchup. It was magical and super cold in the end. Perfect last evening before we headed home again ✨ I love coming home after a trip, there is nothing better than sleeping in your own bed 💤

The last few days were quiet special. We visited Tromsø, the most northern place I have ever been, to see the northern lights and we were super lucky. We saw them 3 times 😍

The first time we saw them at a reindeer camp from the Sami’s.

Did you know? 🦌
Female reindeers keep their antlers in spring while male reindeers loose theirs. (Don’t worry they regrow every year.) It is a sign that they eat for two while they are pregnant and need more food than the male reindeers.
After they gave birth around May they loose their antlers due to the hormones. After a while they actually eat their antler because it contains a lot of vitamins and viagra. A bit like us humans when we consume the placenta.

It was amazing to learn about reindeers and the Sami culture. Keep your eyes open for more northern lights 👀

Feminine energy ⭕️

Everyone consists of masculine and feminine energy, regardless of our gender. Diving into the subject of energies, I recognized that I was nearly completely running on my masculine energy. How should I not? Looking around us, society runs mainly on masculine energy.

I slowly began to explore the feminine energy ⭕️ Tuning in with my sensitivity & cyclicality, listening more to my intuition and inner voice. Surrendering, flowing, letting go and letting myself be supported. Feeling more and more in tune with myself and my feminine energy brought a relieve and so much clarity. Finding the ideal balance for each of my cycle phases is a long path.

The 🔑 lies in finding that balance between the masculine and the feminine energy for yourself. Recognizing if you are shifting too much into one energy and finding a way to ease back into balance.

Ovulation - Inner Summer ☀️

Physically your body releases the egg in the moment of ovulation. One month from one ovary and the next month from the other side. Most people experience more cervical mucus (discharge) in their underwear before and during ovulation.
Your energy reaches its peak and often there is more physical, sexual and creative energy, therefore you are more outgoing, confident and extroverted. Maybe there is even a deeper sense of attraction towards your partner or others. And men also think you are more sexually attractive.
In yoga with associate Ovulation with the Inner Summer and the Full Moon 🌕 Because those are the bright days and we tend to practice a more strengthening and uplifting yoga class.

Luteal Phase - Inner Autumn 🍁

The phase right before your period starts, often called the PMS phase or pre-menstruation phase. In this phase our hormone estrogen drops, the hormone progesterone peaks and drops as well after a few days. This is why we often feel more vulnerable, perhaps a little more on the edge or a little less energetic. Maybe you like to start turning inwards already or let your creativity flow while knitting, pottering, reading or perhaps take a bit slower yoga class. It’s also the phase where we often feel most connected to ourselves.
We also call this phase our inner autumn and it is associated with the last quarter of the moon. This phase lasts between 10-16 days (never longer) until we approach our menstruation.

Little Mermaid 🧜🏼‍♀️
The little mermaid is one of my favorite poses to help with pelvic and sacroiliac joint pain no matter if you are pregnant or not. There are two movements - pelvic rocking and twisting. We repeat them both 14 times or until we feel that the movement is easy and smooth.

Position & movement:
One leg is in the front and the foot meets the opposite knee. The other leg is bent to the back and the top of the foot lies on the mat.
Rocking - like in cat-cow we are opening up through the front tilting the hips forward and rounding the back when moving backwards.
Twisting - the hand that’s on the side with the front leg comes to the mat slightly behind you. Then you press into the mat with the top of the foot and push yourself slightly up. A tiny movement that activates your leg and especially your butt. Then move back down.

Breath:
Use the breath to support the movement.
For the rocking we IN opening up through the front and with the EX we round the back.
For the twisting we move with the IN into the twist and EX release. If you have pelvic pain/lower back pain or you want to develop strength and stability then you can twist with the EX. Moving into the twist with the EX you can also contract the pelvic floor for more comfort and stabilization in the pelvis.

Props: You can use a pillow under the knee that’s in the air for support and a small bolster underneath your sitting bones if you feel any pulling in the knees or groins.

We came back to Winterwonderland ❄️ at -20 degrees after spending Christmas and New Years Eve in Germany. It was magical and coming home felt like we were on holidays, but this is actually where we live for nearly two years now. In those moments I feel very grateful for the life I’m creating for myself and together with my husband 🙏🏼 This is how yoga off the mat can look like ♥️

The last weeks of 2023 were filled with twinkle lights, grounding moments, magic sun light, time with my husband, christmas cookie baking and eating, exploding northern lights, time at home with family and friends 💫
2023 was a year of change, acceptance and finding a new every day rhythm. I look forward to continue this journey in 2024. When we are back home I look forward to start reflecting the old year and slowly start setting my new intentions. I always take my time for it and don’t think they need to be ready in the first week of January. Taking the time I need and not doing what everyone else does is what feels right for me. I hope you you take the time you need. Maybe I see you on the mat in the new year 🧘🏼‍♀️

2023 was a year of change, acceptance and finding a new every day rhythm. I look forward to continue this journey in 2024. When we are back home I look forward to start reflecting the old year and slowly start setting my new intentions. I always take my time for it and don’t think they need to be ready in the first week of January. Taking the time I need and not doing what everyone else does is what feels right for me. I hope you you take the time you need. Maybe I see you on the mat in the new year 🧘🏼‍♀️

Yoga isn’t always movement and Asanas (poses) - sometimes yoga is simply lying on the mat with a lot of props and breathing to regulate the nervous system.
On Thursday I felt overwhelmed by all the things that needed to be done. I felt the need to just rest and breath. This is how my set up looked like. And since it was very cold I brought my hot water bottle along 😉

Follicular Phase - Inner Spring 🌷

If you observe what happens during spring in nature this is what is happening in your body - your energy rises, everything comes into a flow. It’s a great time to have dinner with friends, important business meetings or maybe a more intense yoga class or workout.

The Follicular Phase is therefore also called Inner Spring. For the energy levels to rise it can take a few days because the body may be exhausted from the menstruation phase. The follicular phase starts with the end of your period and it ends with the day you ovulate. It lasts on average between 10-23 days with a 2-7 days fertile window.

During this time of the cycle one of your eggs gets ready for ovulation.
This is also the time when your cervical mucus changes the most. Cervical mucus (CM) is the fluidity your body produces to transport the sperm towards the egg, without it the sperm could not survive. But it’s also a great way to track when your ovulation is approaching and where your fertile window is either if you want to avoid pregnancy or fall pregnant.
If you observe your CM it will most likely first be sticky and cloudy a few days after your menstruation ends (low fertility) and then more smoother egg white around ovulation (higher fertility).

⭕️ Menstruation - Inner Winter

I thought I share a bit of what I learned about each cycle phase and how to practice in each phase according to the phase you are currently in. Let’s start with a few facts about menstruation.

A new cycle begins with the first day of the period. A healthy menstruation lasts around 2-7 days. During those days the uterus sheds blood, cervical mucus and parts of the uterine lining. In those first days the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone are low and then start to rise. With the rising of estrogen you often feel a mood and libido boost.

The Menstruation Phase is often called the Inner Winter and connected to the New Moon 🌑 because it’s the dark phase of the moon. During this time we often feel more tired, want to spend more time alone and rest. It’s a good time to reflect, turn inwards and set new intentions for the rest of the cycle. Our bodies need a bit more attention, comfort, safety and warmth during this phase. We tend to not make big decisions, have an intense workout or party during our menstruation phase. Rather acknowledging that we need to slow down, rest and nurture our bodies is a big step. A nourishing slow practice is for me personally the go to. Sometimes it’s even just a two minute breathing exercise. Or a bit more movement for example circling Asanas and a restorative yoga class can help to reduce menstrual pain.

Don’t worry if your cycle is absent for example because of birth control, infertility, pregnancy, postpartum or after menopause you can always practice along the moon.
Connecting to the moon is a wonderful way to connect with cyclical living. The New Moon today reflects the Inner Winter and it’s the perfect time to practice slow and nurturing yoga, journal, breath or do a yoga nidra. A little side note: New Moon doesn’t mean you have to have your menstruation during the new moon. Some women menstruate around the full moon, some around the new moon and some in between.

This range changes throughout life especially when first starting the period or going into premenopause.) Our energy levels depend on, in which part of our cycle we are in. Comparing the menstrual cycle to the men’s cycle which is based on the 24-hour sleep-wake-cycle and how society works it’s no wonder that we are not in tune with our menstrual cycles.

What is Feminine Yoga?

I thought I give you a little introduction to what Feminine Yoga is so that you better understand my teaching style.
Yoga was invented by men for men, hard to believe since in western culture it is mostly women who practice and teach yoga. The approach of classical yoga is made for the male body and includes many masculine poses (Asanas).
However, in Feminine Yoga, inspiration comes from the female anatomy, physiology, hormones, cycle and course of life. It is a practice that celebrates the feminine, both physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is about how to best support women through all the small and large transitions and changes in their lives.
The female central element is the uterus (In German: Gebärmutter, in Norwegian: livmor), also called Shakti, which is the center of our feminine power and accompanies us through our first period, monthly cycles, pregnancies, births and menopause.
Our masculine-influenced daily lives affect the feminine body, which is constantly changing. Feminine Yoga creates an inclusive, safe and nurturing space for women who bleed, are pregnant, give birth, breastfeed & sweat.
Feminine Yoga is for anyone who would like to incorporate more movement but also rest & relaxation into their everyday life. Since I feel like we all need a little more rest, I would love to see you on the mat to move and wind down together.
